Brethren, dwelling in unity

(This painting is entitled Brotherly Love, and is the work of Pierre Edouard Frere, 1885.)

From The Psalms in Metre, Scottish Metrical Version

Psalm 133

Behold, how good a thing it is, and how becoming well,

Together such as brethren are in unity to dwell!

Like precious ointment on the head, that down the beard did flow,

Ev’n Aaron’s beard, and to the skirts did of his garments go.

As Hermon’s dew, the dew that doth on Sion’ hills descend:

For there the blessing God commands, life that shall never end.

The commentator Matthew Henry has many edifying things to say about Psalm 133. Here is a notable quote:

Those that live in love and peace shall have the God of love and peace with them now, and they shall be with him shortly, with him for ever, in the world of endless love and peace. How good then is it, and how pleasant!

I am especially thinking of love to the brethren, and unity with them, because today is a very special day. Today we were accepted into membership at the Bellingham United Reformed Church. It is our earnest desire, not only to receive blessing from them, but to be a blessing to them as well.

As I think about dwelling in unity with our Christian brethren I’m also reminded of I John 2:9,10:

He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.

He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.

Also, I John 3:14,18:

We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.

My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

And, then, just a bit more from I John 1:3,4 regarding our fellowship with one another in the Lord:

That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.
