Ten Inventions That Have Made Life Easier

June 24th, 2008 . by Joyce

The prompt this week for Ten on Tuesday
is: Ten inventions that have made life easier:

  • Automatic clothes washers and dryers
  • Gas or electric cook tops and ovens
  • Good roads
  • Water purification and delivery systems
  • Indoor plumbing and sewage systems
  • Generation and harnessing of electric power
  • The printing press (more widespread dissemination of information, development of literature)
  • Machines to make large-scale farming possible
  • Irrigation methods
  • The drip coffee maker with an insulated carafe. (Yum! This makes the best coffee in the world, if you freshly grind some good coffee beans.)

Diederick really misses his mommy, but is doing his best to socialize here. He’s especially partial to Lassie. :)

Deeder’s First Basketball Game

June 21st, 2008 . by Joyce
Diederick very much enjoyed going to the Bellingham SLAM basketball game versus our arch-rivals, the Tacoma Jazz. The Jazz are a hard-playing team, and among our favorite opponents, but they seemed intimidated by the SLAM tonight. Several times our team led by 30 points. The final score was SLAM, 155 to Jazz, 117. Diederick stayed interested the entire two hours, joining in by clapping and pointing. He very much enjoyed his snack of popcorn, and bites of Daddy’s Snickers bar. Here is a photo of Darren and son at the basketball game:

Some Long Ago Photos

June 20th, 2008 . by Joyce
I hope to do a Haiku Friday post later on today. I don’t dare take the time to do it just yet, because I’m off to a late start, due to my relaxed morning thus far:

  • We all slept in, and awoke feeling refreshed.
  • We’ve been taking turns caring for/playing with/following the sweet little Deeder-man while his daddy is out exploring the local job market (hope, hope!)
  • After reading a portion of the Bible at Blue Letter Bible, I read Laura’s blog post about how she is doing while Darren and Diederick are here visiting us.
  • Next of course I made my moves on some Scrabulous games over at Facebook.
  • I chatted online with Laura and then with a friend who is coming over for a barbecue this evening with her family. She is a teacher at the Christian school that Laura and some of our other children attended for a while. Laura loved volunteering in her first-grade classroom, and this friend, Kay, wants to see little Diederick, of course. :)

Before I get to work, I’ll at least put up this long ago photo of Laura with Debra and Seth:

Here’s one of Seth and Laura:

Deeder Explores

June 19th, 2008 . by Joyce
Our daughter Laura (mommy of Diederick, our almost-two-years-old grandson) is at home taking care of baby Carly while Darren (daddy) and Deeder are here visiting. She wants lots of pictures of the visit, so here are some from this morning:

Here is Deeder-man taking Auntie Lydia for a walk in the back yard.

“Here, Kitty, Kitty! Diederick wants to see you!”

“Hi, Bonny Boy! I like you!”

Deeder with Auntie Rebecca. :)

Darren and Deeder are Coming!

June 18th, 2008 . by Joyce
Tonight is THE night: Our son-in-law Darren and our almost two-year-old grandson Diederick are arriving from Vermont for a visit. Our daughter Laura is at home with new baby Carly, already missing her guys very much. On her post today, she asked me to post lots of pictures. The guys aren’t here yet, but here is a picture of the sturdy book I picked up today for Diederick. He loves ‘oggies, so I hope he will enjoy this book:

Also, Percy cat stands ready to greet Diederick tomorrow:

Lassie was gentle with Diederick during his last visit, and promises to once again be a hospitable doggie:

Finally, I’m happy to report that we may have lovely weather while our visitors are here. Here are some shots I took early this evening in the back yard:

Third Blogiversary!

June 7th, 2008 . by Joyce

Good Afternoon, Friends. Just wanted to let you know I’ve been blogging for THREE YEARS, as of today.

My children INSISTED that I begin blogging, knowing that I would enjoy it. They even had to insist that I open an email account. I must admit that they were right; I have had a great time with this blogging business. It is:

  • A creative outlet.
  • A way to remember special events.
  • A way to share favorite photos.
  • A way to make new friends.
  • A way to stay in touch with far-flung friends and family.

To be, or not to be, SHORT?

June 4th, 2008 . by Joyce

Here’s an old photo of Seth and me; I think he’s about four or five. So cute but so serious looking. You may also notice that my hair is short and not curly. I’m still trying to decide on a hairdo change. Any advice?

Here is a side view of the same hairstyle:
