Give Me Five Monday – 5 Tips to Save Money

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

The prompt this week at Give Me Five Monday is “Give me five tips and tricks to save money or cut corners to stretch your budget.”

Five Tips to Save Money (List 1):

  • Make a master list of tried and true meals you know your family enjoys. Of course, change the list whenever you desire, to avoid boredom. Keep the staple items on hand for making these meals, and purchase any fresh items you’ll need for preparing them the week you plan to make them. In this way, you won’t be running to the grocery store every day, and won’t be tempted to buy other things while you’re there!
  • Eat most of your meals at home. If time allows, you can also bake your own breads, cookies and desserts. Restaurant meals are EXPENSIVE, though they are a lovely, once-in-a-while treat.
  • Don’t go window shopping. You are putting yourself in temptation’s way. Only go shopping when you need some specific item. Make a list, and try to stick with it.
  • On a similar note, try to opt out of receiving catalogs. If that’s not possible, simply recycle them. But, whatever you do, DON’T look at them, unless you’re prepared to want something, and eventually to purchase it.
  • MAINTAIN your clothes, your furniture, your home, your vehicles, your appliances, etc. They will last longer, and save you the cost of replacing them too often.

Five Tips to Save Money (List 2):

  • Take advantage of FREE entertainment in your community. Go to the park. Hike and bike local trails. Enjoy hobbies with friends.
  • Before purchasing books, first check them out from the library. Only purchase those of high interest, which you will refer to or reread.
  • Before purchasing a big ticket item, do your research. Avoid expensive impulse buying.
  • Better yet, purchase reliable USED items. We found one of our vehicles on Craig’s List, as well as a “new-to-us” oven to replace our oven which would have cost too much to repair.
  • If you use a credit card, purchase only what you can repay immediately. It is so easy to overspend when using a credit card. If you use one, it’s nice if it offers a rebate of some sort.

What to take to a desert island

Monday, May 19th, 2008

The hostess of Give Me Five Monday
asks this week, “What are five movies you would choose to have along if you were stranded on a desert island?”

I CAN and HAVE watched some movies more than once, mainly to be sociable with my family, but movies just don’t compare with BOOKS, in my opinion. I would much rather reread a book than watch a movie again. So I am substituting BOOKS for MOVIES. Here are 5 books I would like to have with me if I were stranded on a desert island:

Break Time

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

I have a couple good posts in mind.

For dinner last night I prepared one of the children’s favorite “comfort” meals, a homemade salmon chowder, MINUS the salmon. 🙂 Once I’m home from work I’ll post that recipe with some pictures. The recipe will include the salmon, for those of you who prefer the “whole” recipe. 😛

I had hoped yesterday to do a Give Me Five Monday post, but the hostess of that meme is extra busy these days and didn’t send out a prompt. 🙁

As usual, I also have been staying up too late, and that caught up with me yesterday. Rather than stay up just a little longer to put up a little post, I curled up in bed with a good book (A book review will make a good post in due time.) and went to bed on time for once.

Usually I would do a Ten on Tuesday post, but I’ll be skipping that this week as well, because the prompt is Ten Places I haven’t been yet that I would like to travel. I don’t travel well, so any traveling on my part will be mainly vicarious.

Well, break is about over. I’ll catch ya later.

P.S. – I also took a fun quiz for which I will post the link in another post. This quiz asks you how you pronounce certain words, which is an ongoing source of amusement for some of us. 🙂

Five Favorite Candies

The theme for Give Me Five Monday
this week is Five Favorite Candies. I should be cooking dinner just now, but I’m still bushed from running errands all day, so this counts as my coffee break!

  1. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. I only allow myself to have these occasionally, when I’m out shopping, because I do so enjoy them. Salty . . . sweet . . . chocolatey . . . What more need be said?
  2. Nestle Treasures, especially the “Rich Dark Chocolate Filled with Luscious Caramel” variety. I eat about one or two of these per day, with coffee. That’s to keep me sweet.
  3. Divinity, homemade. I find it doesn’t turn out as well in our damp climate as in dry Arizona.
  4. Peanut Brittle, homemade. Fortunately, I haven’t made this for decades.
  5. Do unbaked cookies made with rolled oats and cocoa count as candy? Those are really good, too.

5 Things I’m Looking Forward To

  1. The birth of our granddaughter in late May/early June
  2. Summer vacation at Grampa and Gramma Taron’s place in beautiful Inverness, CA, including the trip down 101 along the Oregon and northern California coastline
  3. Planting some annuals in the garden, such as snapdragons, salvia, cosmos, sweet alyssum, and begonias. I’m even looking forward to weeding IN WARMER WEATHER!
  4. Learning to use our new digital camera
  5. Helping chaperone and cook for the high school girls’ soccer camp this summer.

Give Me Five Monday

My friend Storyteller of Small Reflections is participating in Give Me Five Monday which is hosted by Beccagirl of BeccA’s Buzz. I’m following her lead in doing this meme as well. 🙂 The prompt for March 10, 2008 is the one I’m choosing to do:

Name 5 ways I de-stress, relax, wind down, or kick back.

  1. I love to think of posts for my blog. I find this to be a relaxing and rewarding creative outlet. It’s also a great way to meet others who are interested in some of the same subjects and activities, such as writing Haiku poetry.
  2. Each afternoon I enjoy taking our dog for a walk. Sometimes it’s difficult to tear myself away from the computer, especially if I’m engrossed in reading or writing, but . . . I always feel so refreshed after the walk! The old doggie enjoys it, too.
  3. I also enjoy reading books, nonfiction as well as fiction. If you’re on Facebook, you can check out some of my reads on Books iRead. I enjoy writing up short reviews of my reads and posting them there as well.
  4. facebook.jpg

  5. Speaking of Facebook, I love playing Scrabulous. That doesn’t mean I’m a champion, just that I find it fun. I have a couple of friends who play their moves so quickly it’s almost like playing in person!
  6. scrabulous.jpg

  7. Uh oh. I need more space, or maybe need to do this meme again. I guess I’ll go for: I enjoy going out for a great beer and pizza at the North Fork Beer Shrine with my husband. The beer is so good, you will never want store-bought again. That restaurant is especially fun because Rick often meets up with old friends from his log home construction days there.
