Paedobaptism – Why?

Another site I love to read is the Reformation 21 blog. A posting today by Ligon Duncan is an excellent synopsis of WHY Presbyterians (of which I am one) baptize believers AND their children.

The various ministers who write for Reformation 21 do not agree on everything, but they state their beliefs with intelligence and graciousness, and sometimes with humor. 🙂

We went from a mainstream charasmatic evangelical church to our Reformed church 4 years ago. I had never seriously considered paedo-baptism before then and always wondered when I should get my children baptized. My oldest had pofessed Christ at 2 and never showed any indication that she wasn’t a believer. Could I take what she did at such a young age seriously? Or did I need to wait for some confirming conversion experience? When could she take communion? How could I be sure she really understand?

It was such a relief to come to understand the paedo-baptist view. Now our children are all baptized into their Christian community as we present them to God believing by faith that the Lord will fulfill His promises to us.

I’m thankful, Kerri, that the Lord provided you and your husband the teaching you needed in order to know what place He has provided in His church for the children.

Do read the little article by Ligon Duncan; it’s good!
