Thursday 13 – Fair Time!

August 14th, 2008 . by Joyce

Thirteen things I did at the Northwest Washington Fair this year:
1. I learned how to make cotton candy, and made lots of it.
2. Got very sticky. All over. From wisps of cotton candy.
3. This was in the concessions booth for our high school Music Boosters club, where I worked a shift yesterday and today.
4. Saw that our daughter Kayla was awarded Best of Show for a painting she did of her best friend. Congratulations, Kayla!
5. Found out that one of my daughters’ girlfriends is very good at judging vegetables and other produce. Congratulations, Paige!
6. Watched the horse show at the grandstand. This is my favorite thing to do at the fair. Big horses, little horses, coaches, miniature chariots, barrel racing, on and on. There’s nothing like it!
7. Talked with lots of friends, some of whom practically live at the fairgrounds this time of year, due to their involvement with 4H, judging, volunteering, etc. That would be Grace, and Sue, too.
8. Listened to The Timebenders do some great remixes of music from the 50s, 60s and 70s. They have a lot of energy and are quite funny.
9. Caught the very end of the magic show by our favorite young magician, Sterling Dietz.
10. I ate a candy apple for the first time in probably 20 years. Quite yummy, but too much candy.
11. I stayed far, far away from all rides.
12. I did not try to win any plastic blow-up toys.
13. I had a good time.

Sounds like a great time, Joyce. I would love to know how to make cotton candy.

I have never braved a candy apple, though they are beautiful. Much prefer the caramel ones!

Great list – LOL at the cotton candy. Congratulations to your daughter. We love fairs. We used to live in southern Cal and participate in the LA County Fair (larger than most state fairs) so we get a real kick out of the county fairs here in the U.P. now. We did Iron County yesterday and are going to do the Upper Peninsula State today. It’s the only state I know of that has 2 state fairs in 2 different locations.

Making cotton candy sounds like fun! Horse judging is one of my favorite things to watch at the fair too. And I love candy apples!

    Sounds like a fun day!!

I haven’t been to a fair like this in a long time but you’ve reminded me of what I’ve been missing!! I love cotton candy and would love to know how to make it…although I hate the stickiness if it gets on my clothes! I must look out for a NY State Fair…everyone needs to feel young again sometimes!
I loved your T13, I’m glad I stopped by. And thank you for visiting mine!

Cute post. I esp. like #11 and #12. We passed on the rides as well. I haven’t had a candied apple in decades. Was it as good as it was when you last had one? Where were Timebenders and when did they play? Kayla’s painting is just fab-u-lous!! So much to do and so little energy to do it all in. We are tired from our 3 days at the fair and we didn’t even stay all day for any one of them. And we looked for you but didn’t find you. I guess we needed to know which of the numerous food booths you’d be at. Now i know….

Thanks for your comments! The Fair was fun, and working in a concession stand a new experience. I’m game to do it again next year. :)

I must correct myself: It was a caramel apple, not a candy apple. Oops! I don’t recall if I’ve EVER had a candy apple.

Oh, that sounds like fun. I miss those fairs so much, and hope to be able to get back to them someday. I can’t find any good ones around here!

Great TT!! I really miss the county fairs of my childhood–I used to work in our schools Gumbo Stand. (I grew up in coastal Mississippi). Sounds like you had a great time!
